This book is part of what is set to become a comprehensive and useful series on Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) for children and young people. The structure of the book is clear and takes the reader through the common anxiety disorders, models of treatment and the evidence for the effectiveness of CBT for anxiety disorders (Chapters 1 and 2).

Following on from that, in Chapters 3 and 4, the reader is guided through the basic principles of CBT, from common dysfunctional cognitive processes (e.g. attention bias, threat perception, coping bias and perceived lack of control), the possible role of parental behaviour (e.g. over-control, modelling and reinforcement of avoidant behaviour). Throughout the book, practical and clear advice is offered on how to tackle common pitfalls in therapy.

The assessment, formulation and treatment chapters (Chapters 5–9) are equally helpful for the various stages of intervention, offering a step by step guide to cognitive behaviour therapy with children and young people. Chapter 9 is dedicated to problem solving, exposure and relapse prevention and Chapter 11 deals with common problems to emerge with this population (e.g. an unsupportive family context, promoting “ownership”, limited intellectual ability) and offers simple solutions that can be tried.

The book concludes with Chapter 12, which contains a selection of worksheets and other materials that work well with many children and young people. Helpfully, these can also be downloaded from the web.
